VISUAL-AUDITORY INTEGRATION SKILLS INFLUENCE OUR ABILITY TO 'LOOK' & 'LISTEN' SIMULTANEOUSLY!
VISUAL-AUDITORY INTEGRATION: This refers to the process by which we synthesize information received through the senses of sight and hearing. This is an important skill in a lecture room environment where one is presented with visual information and required to listen to the presenter.

People experiencing difficulties with Visual-Auditory Integration may shut down one system (Visual or Auditory) in order to concentrate on the other system. Otherwise, they experience Sensory Overload. An example of this would be the individual who continues to copy the notes from the board, but hasn't heard the teacher tell everyone to take home a critical book for homework.

If one system or the other has weakness present, it may require remediation. For vision problems, one would consult with a vision specialist. If auditory problems are present, one would consult an auditory specialist. The eventual goal would be to strengthen each skill, then work to integrate them.
